How to Choose a Great Ceiling Light
Have you noticed how a great light fixture can completely transform a room? An ambitious goal. It can be hard to figure out what that great fixture should be. I always start with inspiration photos. Check out the rooms below. What do you think of these lights (pendants, not flush mounts, I know) in a Victorian home? Both are eye-catching!
It’s easier to dial in a specific search through Pinterest than Google, and sometimes I go straight to a bookmarked interior designer for ideas. For lighting, I love to scroll through the portfolio at Jean Stoffer Design. She’s so talented at pairing modern lighting with traditional designs.
Once you have a rough idea, here are factors to consider as you shop for a modern flush mount light fixture.
Lighting Needs in Different Rooms
The first challenge is deciding how much light you really need in a space. More light is almost always better than less. Cute light fixtures with one bulb are eye-catching, but that’s really never sufficient outside of a small area, like an entry or closet. If you have multiple light sources, you might pull it off in a larger space. Use caution.
Here’s an example: cute bedroom but that ceiling light won’t cut it.
My rule of thumb for bedrooms with one ceiling light is a 2-bulb minimum; I usually aim for 3 bulbs, but no fewer than 2.
While the light below is not an Amazon-sourced fixture (I believe it’s an older version of this CB2 light), you can dig around for somewhat similar versions like this one or this one or this one. This is a bedroom staged as an office, but the light fixture works for either use.
Bathrooms need a variety of lighting: an overhead ceiling light fixture helps balance vanity lighting or multiple sconces. If you’re shopping today for a flush mount light fixture for a bathroom, make sure it’s damp-rated.

This is a beginner-friendly DIY project and it feels empowering to tackle it yourself. Be sure to turn off the power before you begin. The video mentions a circuit tester but we find this pen-style voltage tester easier to use. (The outlet tester in the pack is also handy to have in your tool kit.)
You can also use the voltage tester to check light switches if you’re planning to replace them or just trouble-shooting.
LED Ceiling Lights – What’s the Deal?
When it comes to buying modern flush mount ceiling light fixtures from Amazon, it’s hard to miss the LED lights. That’s because they are cheap. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Yes, LED light bulbs are more energy-efficient and cost-effective in the long run. That’s the great thing about LEDs. We love them as replacement bulbs. These LED bulbs from Amazon Basics are 60W equivalent, soft white, and dimmable:
2. However, if you buy an LED-integrated fixture, be aware that you’ll need to replace the entire fixture when the light burns out. They are considered disposable, which seems counterintuitive (to me) if you’re investing in LEDs for savings or environmental impact. I’ve purchased a few LED light bulbs that advertise a 25-year life span – but die in less than 3 years! True story. Quality control hasn’t caught up to technology, it seems. When it does, these will be a great option!

The options abound in this category of small flush mount and semi-flush lights with a single bulb. I grouped them together because they are roughly the same size. We installed this light in our laundry room at our Denver house. Highly recommend!

My personal favorite is the Moravian star flush mount in our entryway, but it often goes over the $100 threshold. I ordered ours from Pottery Barn years ago, but it’s no longer available. I’ve found a few versions on Amazon that seems to float right around the $100 mark.

Modern Flush Mount Light Fixtures for Larger Rooms
It’s harder to find attractive, modern flush mount light fixtures with 3+ bulbs under $100. Of course, sputnik styles and farmhouse lights have taken over right now, but there are plenty of other options if those aren’t your speed.
I bought two of these lights in the chrome and white finish for our basement and two in the black and white finish for our family room. I’ll share photos once they are installed at our Denver house.

Semi-Flush Mount Light Fixtures
Although this is a flush mount round-up, I’ve included a few semi-flush lights as well. Depending on the design, they might be roughly the same height as a flush mount and still work in your space. If you have room for a relatively shallow semi-flush mount light, you might love one of these options.
The sputnik lights look great with both mid-century designs and more modern decor, as well. This bedroom is cute; the light is probably a pendant, but you can get the same effect with a semi-flush mount. Here’s a semi-flush 5-light version of this fixture.
